Alan Shearer is expecting Newcastle United to sign some players during the January transfer window - and believes that they should target a winger and a centre forward.

The Magpies are enjoying a rich vein of form right now, having won each of their last nine matches across all competitions. Six of those have come in the Premier League, with Eddie Howe's side moving from mid-table and up into the top-four with 38 points from their 21 games this season.

They are the most in-form side in the division, there is no doubt about it, and the Magpies have put themselves in a strong position to finish in the Champions League places. In order to cement their place at the top end of the Premier League, Shearer has advised Newcastle to do some business this month.

With Miguel Almiron at the centre of a reported £10million bid from Atlanta, Newcastle could dip into the market for a new winger. As well as this, Callum Wilson's fitness issues could trigger the Magpies to sign a striker to support Alexander Isak, who has scored 17 goals in 23 matches so far this season.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "Miguel Almiron looks like he’s about to leave the club and I'm expecting some incomings, a wide right position was one of their targets, they went in for Anthony Elanga in the last transfer window but didn't get it over the line.

"I don't know how long Wilson's going to be out for or how his injury is, but I guess another forward would be a priority because of the lack of cover in that position. If they're allowing Almiron to go and with Harvey Barnes being out for about a month then they need some options.

"What I will say is that Newcastle's recruitment over the last four or five years has been brilliant. If you compare Man United's recruitment to Newcastle’s recruitment over the last, four years or so, Newcastle's recruitment has been absolutely magnificent. It really has.

"If you go right throughout the team: Sven Botman, Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Isak. They've been so intelligent in terms of recruitment and that is such an important part of a football club and Newcastle have got that spot on."
