Carlos Alcaraz sealed his place in the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a four-set win over Matteo Berrettini on Centre Court.

The final match of the day was a hugely-anticipated one, with Berrettini, a Wimbledon finalist two years ago, expected to provide a stern examination of Alcaraz’s grass-court credentials. The pair arrived on Centre Court knowing that, barring something truly extraordinary, the Wimbledon curfew would not prove a factor as it had for much of the first week of the tournament.

It was latest in a long line of tests Alcaraz has passed with flying colours, battling back from a set down to take control of the fourth-round match and, after a brief delay as the roof was closed, secure a 3-6 6-3 6-3 6-3 win that sets up a last-eight encounter with Holger Rune. The possibility of a final against Novak Djokovic remains a very real one.

Superb forehand pass down the line from Alcaraz, fair to say he’s having no issues seeing the ball. He does, though, follow it up with a fifth double fault.

A very handy net cord for Berrettini, again he gets to 30-30. Think that backhand pass was going long, but Alcaraz takes no changes and puts the volley away at the net.

Glad I gave the Alcaraz return the big build-up - misfires with that one and Berrettini is on the board in the fourth.

Berrettini saves it, despite Alcaraz jumping to try and reach that smash. Not sure he would have got there had he been even three times taller.

Wonderful touch at the net from Berrettini this time, guides the volley into the empty court and he keeps himself in touch.

Make that big trouble. Forehand long, frustrated turn to his box but there’s nothing they can do about it. Three break points.

Alcaraz does superbly to even make a rally of the first one, charging around the court but Berrettini too good with the forehand. And the Italian saves the second too, big serving.

Deuce! Return from Alcaraz flies long, all three break points have come and gone. He’ll get a fourth opportunity, Berrettini with a tame backhand into the net. Long again from Alcaraz! He’ll be furious if he lets this game slip by.

Back to deuce for a third time though, Berrettini has the chance to get out of this game but the forehand is into the tramlines.

He swiftly makes that three set points, the world number one has been superb in the last 25 minutes or so. Double fault - superb for most of the last 25 minutes.

And now the forehand flies long, 40-30 and just one set point remaining. Poor guy doesn’t realise how badly I’ve jinxed him.

The delicate lets him down, so a swift return to brute force. Ace makes it 40-15, before good work at the net seals the hold and keeps him in the set.

He’s more than fine - moves superbly to the net to put the volley away in the very next point. Huge return from Berrettini, Alcaraz does incredibly well to get it back as he charges to the, but it sits up for the Berrettini forehand. 30-30. Too good! Backhand down the line from Berrettini, break point and he is flying on Centre Court.

That’s not bad either though. Alcaraz hits it way out of trouble, flat forehand winner and he gets it to deuce.

It’s back to deuce for a second, and a third time. Alcaraz unable to get out of this game, again the drop shot lets him down. There is the hold though, had to grind really hard for that.

First one saved. Wow. Alcaraz somehow gets a forehand back, lands a few inches inside the baseline and Berrettini hammers his forehand into the net. 30-40.

But Berrettini has the break now! Alcaraz’s forehand is wide... confirmed after a challenge. Berrettini will serve for the set.

Rybakina through in 20 minutes earlier after that withdrawal, Djokovic sealing victory over Hurkacz and Jabeur then hammering Kvitova.

It means Alcaraz and Berrettini will step onto court shortly, well ahead of schedule.

Plenty of injury problems for Berrettini heading into this tournament, his build-up consisting of a 6-1 6-2 defeat to fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in Stuttgart.

Berrettini got his revenge against Sonego in the first round here though, before picking up two brilliant straight-set wins over Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev.

He will come into this evening’s clash full of confidence, that much is for sure.

It was just a few days before Wimbledon that Matteo Berrettini’s team sat him down and said he needed to decide whether to play or not.

Since mid-April, he had played just once competitively and managed to win just three games, perpetually beset as he was by an abdominal problem.

Had it been any other tournament other than Wimbledon, the 2021 runner-up admits he might not have signed up, and it wasn’t until the morning of his match that he felt fit enough to play.

Berrettini hasn’t had it easy in the draw to date having already beaten Alex di Minaur and Alexander Zverev but in the fourth match on Centre Court tonight faces Carlos Alcaraz.
