Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho has apologised after their FA Cup exit to Fulham.

Ruben Amorim's side saw their defence of the competition come to a disappointing conclusion as they suffered penalty shootout heartache to the Cottagers. Joshua Zirkzee was inconsolable after Bernd Leno made his second stop during the shootout following Victor Lindelof's miss.

Calvin Bassey headed the Premier League side in front on the stroke of half-time after United failed to defend a set-piece. Garnacho was introduced for Christian Eriksen on the hour mark and looked to add impetus to a display lacking inspiration at Old Trafford.

Captain Bruno Fernandes once again was the saviour as he expertly steered past the German shot-stopper from Diogo Dalot's cross. However, the two sides couldn't be separated after 90 minutes, and subsequently 30 minutes of extra-time.

The Cottagers were perfect with their efforts from 12 yards, the Argentinian didn't step up to take a penalty as Fernandes, Dalot and Casemiro converted the first three for the hosts. But Leno guessed the right way to deny both Lindelof and Zirkzee to send Fulham through to the last-eight.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Garnacho posted a picture on his stories writing: "Sorry United fans," with a teary-eyed emoji. United's chances of earning silverware this season now rest on the Europa League with the first-leg of their knockout phase clash against Real Sociedad this week.

Domestically, Amorim's side sit 14th in the table, 16 points clear of the bottom three but just one-point clear of Everton in 16th and ahead of West Ham United on goal-difference. It has been a difficult first few months for the former Sporting CP head coach after failing to arrest United's problematic campaign.
