Alejandro Garnacho is not actively pursuing a move away from Manchester United despite mounting uncertainty over his future.

Napoli have had an offer of around £40million rejected for Garnacho and, while the Italian club are exploring alternative targets, sources say a deal for the winger could still be pursued.

Chelsea have also been linked with Garnacho, 20, and United's struggles to comply with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules could force their hand in this month's transfer window.

Sources say United are under increasing pressure to sell a highly-valuable academy player, which would represent a pure profit under the PSR rules. United signed Garnacho from the Atletico Madrid academy when he was 16 in 2020 and they are already prepared to sell academy graduate Marcus Rashford, who is keen to leave.

The end of the financial year is June 30 and, while the summer transfer window will be open by then, the winter window has become more opportunistic for clubs looking to prey on the financial uncertainty at Premier League teams.

Garnacho was one of a handful of players United deemed not for sale in the summer but the club is now open to any homegrown sales.

United have refused to comment on Garnacho's future and the winter window is open until February 3. Head coach Ruben Amorim indicated on Wednesday he sees Garnacho's future at United. "That is clear. He has talent. He needs to learn to play in a different position. He needs to play better inside.

"He improves a lot in the recovering position when he doesn't have the ball. But doing that, sometimes he's not in the right place to make transitions like he was in the past. I prefer to defend and then build up with all the team to reach the final third.

"He's finding the best way to play in this system. He's improving during training. He started the last game. Let's see tomorrow. I think he changed the way he sees himself."

Garnacho was recalled to the starting line-up for the first time in a month by Amorim for the FA Cup third round tie at Arsenal on Sunday. Garnacho did not start for seven games and was omitted from the squad for the Manchester derby last month.

The Argentina international is under contract at United until 2028, with the option of an additional year.
