Alexis Mac Allister has sent a stirring message after Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Sunday. The Reds were bidding to go eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League table after the Gunners' 1-1 draw at Brighton on Saturday.

Arne Slot's side were heavily favoured to ease past a struggling United side that had lost their previous four fixtures. Liverpool's north-west rivals had also failed to score at Anfield since 2018.

But the visitors put on a spirited display to earn a precious point on Merseyside and came close to securing victory after Harry Maguire missed a guilt-edged chance in the dying seconds. The draw means that Liverpool's advantage at the top of the table is six points with the Reds also having a game in hand over their title rivals.

And Mac Allister has sent a motivational message on Instagram ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham.

"Matches like this push us forward," he said. "We remain top of the table and now focus on the next one," followed by a red love heart and football emoji.

Mac Allister spoke to LFC TV after the match. He said: "In the second half it was like a crazy game, we conceded too many chances, we had our opportunities as well to score goals.

"I think the mentality is there and that's really important as a team to come back like we did today. But at the end when you are winning 2-1 (after) 75 minutes, you have to defend the result and we couldn't do it."

Slot labelled Sunday's draw against United as two points dropped, pointing out Virgil van Dijk's chance moments before Maguire's miss late on.

“Of course, it feels for us as two points dropped,” he said. “I think many people, what will stay in the head for a long time, will be what happens at the end. And that was a big chance for Maguire, of course.

“But what we tend to forget is that two minutes before Virgil had such a big chance as he had to make it 3-2 for us.

“In the end it was a difficult game, a bit similar to the Nottingham Forest game maybe. The playing style of both sides is similar. So defending with a low-block and a lot of bodies, and if they had the ball, not the risk of build-up but play it long.

“Every free-kick they got, they brought it in. It was a bit similar to Forest. It is not always easy to play against that style of football. That’s what showed against Forest and showed again today as well.

“Especially if they have such good quality players that can defend so well. Then it is not easy to play through that low block that they had.”
