Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has outlined his desire to see Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain at Anfield beyond the end of the season, when their current contracts are due to expire as things stand.

So far, there has been no news on a renewal for any of the key trio. Asked by reporters if anything had changed regarding his situation after the game at Newcastle, Van Dijk said he had "nothing" new to say.

Each of the players can begin talks with clubs abroad over a pre-contract agreement ahead of the summer in under a month unless something is signed with Liverpool before then. And amid a potential Premier League and Champions League title push, that would be a distraction everyone should be keen to avoid.

It is something that the Liverpool players are aware of, though the outcome is not yet clear. "Of course there’s a lot of of jokes let’s say," Mac Allister told Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football.

"But at the end, it’s a personal thing and we are going to respect the club and them in whatever decision they make. Of course we want them to stay with us but as I say, it’s a personal decision and I would never get there."

Liverpool.com says: As the weeks go by, it only becomes more obvious that Liverpool needs to get a move on when it comes to tying the trio down. Salah is arguably the best player on the planet at the moment; he just overtook Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot and continues to make match-winning contributions game after game.

Van Dijk remains the best center-back in the world and is showing no signs of slowing down, while Alexander-Arnold's best years could still be ahead of him. Losing any of them for nothing would not be a good look, and replacing them would be a mammoth task.
