Alfie May explains bizarre goal celebration in Birmingham City's win at Wigan
Alfie May celebrated his first goal at Wigan Athletic by swinging around a pole and he's swung the League One title race back in Birmingham City’s favour.
The reigning League One player of the year bagged a brace in Blues’ 3-0 win at Wigan and celebrated his opener in style. May wrapped himself around the stanchion behind the goal in one of the more unusual goal celebrations Blues fans have witnessed this season.
Explaining what prompted it, May said: “Before the corner happened one of their players was just getting me in headlocks and throwing me about. He must have known that I was a threat in front of goal.

“It’s incredible. The ref saw it and said about the player getting off me because he was just throwing me around, I didn’t understand it.
“So when I scored, I saw the pole and I thought if he’s swinging me around I’m going to swing around this pole. I’ve seen a few comments about ‘May-Mysterio’ and things like that. If I keep scoring and keep swinging around poles, I don’t mind!”
Fittingly, May’s first goal at The Brick Community Stadium was the 100th of the striker’s career in the EFL. The second of May’s day took his tally to 10 league goals for the season.
On his century, May added: “It’s nice to get that, I didn’t know that. I didn’t think I would get that. A lot of people write you off in football. I’m delighted with that.”
