Alfie May has revealed a personal gee up sparked his return to form and the scoresheet in Birmingham City’s win over Stockport County.

The 31-year-old netted both goals in Blues’ 2-0 win over Stockport to end a two-month wait for a goal in League One. And May admitted his confidence has taken a hit during that time.

“I was probably doubting myself over the last couple of weeks,” he said. “I left my house today, sat in the car and said I need to get back to doing what I’m good at. I needed those goals tonight.

“I probably shanked it (first goal) but I haven’t scored in ages and I’ve probably been trying too hard. I know myself that performance-wise I needed to perform tonight and I said to myself about getting back to Alfie May and how I perform.

“To get that first goal off the foot, and it bounces in, you take anything as a striker. After that I felt back to myself and felt really confident.

“When Jay slipped Keshi in and I saw no-one in the box, with the defenders behind me, I just made a dart for the centre and I knew Keshi was going to square it. He’s a winger that wants to get assists so I gambled on it. It’s nice to come off the pitch with a brace and get back to doing what I know best.”
