Leeds United piled the pressure on title rivals Sheffield United and Burnley by thrashing Watford 4-0 at Vicarage Road last night. The comprehensive win re-established the Whites' five-point advantage at the top of the table, albeit the Blades and the Clarets have a game in hand.

Daniel James (2), Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe got on the scoresheet as United recorded a third consecutive win. Daniel Farke's troops have now now scored 18 goals without reply in Championship action, including a 7-0 hammering of Cardiff City earlier this month. The last team to beat them in the league? Blackburn Rovers on November 30.

talkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil said: “By the way, big result for Leeds last night. I looked at that and thought ‘Watford are a funny side’ – Leeds absolutely smashed them, they are flying. They’re marching on.”

Former Scotland international Ally McCoist also hailed United as they took another huge step towards securing promotion to the Premier League. “Massive result – I’ve just been told that [in] the last six games they’ve scored 18 [times] and haven’t lost a goal," he said.

Farke, who twice led Norwich to promotion to the Premier League as champions, singled out James for special praise after the Wales international took his tally to 10 goals for the season.

“There was always criticism of his end product but he was always open to improve," said the German. “He brought himself into such a good shape that he can now play with confidence. His work ethic is crucial and is why he is delivering what he has delivered.”
