Ally McCoist revealed that Barry Ferguson let him in on the Rangers tactical tweak that saw them stun Fenerbahce.

The Scottish Premiership side went into the Europa League clash in Turkey as major underdogs as the interim boss pitted his wits against legendary boss Jose Mourinho in the first leg of the last-16 tie. Off the back of a dismal defeat to Motherwell on Saturday, the stand-in Rangers boss made changes with John Souttar and Connor Barron coming in - as well as a change in system.

The fans were left surprised to see Ferguson deploy returning Souttar, Robin Propper and James Tavernier as a back three with Ridvan Yilmaz and Jefte playing as the wing-backs. It appeared to catch out former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Mourinho. Cyriel Dessers was the star man as he opened the scoring with a Vaclav Cerny double leaving the iconic boss stunned. Going into the second leg, Alexander Djiku offered the visitors something to hold onto.

Co-commentator McCoist revealed he wasn't caught out like the Portuguese boss, telling TNT Sports: "Can I let you into a little secret? After his (Ferguson's) interview with you and Connie (McLaughlin, reporter) I asked him 'are you going with a three?' - and he looked at me and nodded. So I knew."

Co-commentator Rory Hamilton noted back: "You kept it quiet from me right enough." McCoist joked: "I'm an old Boy's Brigade - you know the rules.

"I just had a wee sneaky feeling, I don't know why."
