New West Brom manager Tony Mowbray has revealed how Manchester United star Amad Diallo showed his class with a touching message to his former boss.

Mowbray managed Amad in a highly successful loan spell at Sunderland during the 2022/23 campaign, as the pair helped the Black Cats reach the Championship play-off semi-finals.

After a difficult loan spell at Rangers, Amad rekindled his career at the Stadium of Light under Mowbray's tutelage and scored 14 goals as he was named the PFA Championship Fans' Player of the Year.

He has since gone on to establish himself as one of United's key players but he has not forgotten the role Mowbray played in forging his career path.

So when Mowbray fell ill last year with bowel cancer, messages of support throughout his treatment flooded in from the football world.

The 61-year-old has made a full recovery and has been given the all clear and recently returned to management after being appointed manager of West Bromwich Albion for a second spell.

And when discussing the support he has received, Mowbray singled out Amad for a classy message he sent him recently while in the midst of a good run of form, on a personal level, for United.

"Those lads do keep in touch with me, it is amazing," Mowbray told West Brom's official YouTube channel, when asked if he still kept in touch with members of the Baggies side he managed to promotion to the Premier League in 2007/08.

"I sometimes sit and think 'this is amazing'. Even lads I managed at Hibernian keep in touch and from the job before this one. I hope it is because we treated them well, helped them in their career and they grew into good footballers and we played a part in it.

"So if it is just a text to say: 'Gaffer, I heard you're not well. I wish you and your family all best'. Just little pick me up messages from people from 20 years ago. It is amazing really because they don't need to and yet they do.

"Even Amad Diallo was texting me the other day saying it was great that I had a job and was back in the game and it was good to see that my health was good.

"They are just good people and good human beings who we have been around and have hopefully helped in their careers. It has really made me feel the football community. What a world to be involved in.

"Some amazing senior managers who have texted me out of the blue and you think 'whoa'. People who I have looked up to in my life and then young players texting me. It has been really supportive. I am now back at work and I want to be good at what I do."

In what has been a poor season for United collectively, Amad has emerged as a key player under Ruben Amorim. The 22-year-old has nine goals and seven assists to his name in all competitions and has impressed at both wing-back and in attacking midfield.
