“I am really proud to have signed this new contract," said Amad on Thursday.

"I have had some incredible moments with this club already but there is so much more to come. I have huge ambitions in the game and I want to achieve history at Manchester United.

“I have learnt so much since arriving here four years ago; I am very grateful to the coaches and staff who have helped me to develop, and to the fans for driving me forward every day.

“It has been a difficult season, but I fully believe that we are on the right path and the future is going to be really special. I am ready to give everything to help the team and make our fans proud."

Amad signed a new contract that will expire in the summer of 2030 and it was well deserved after an impressive 12 months in which he finally demonstrated what he's capable of.

It felt like Amad wasn't going to receive the opportunities that he desperately wanted at the club, but he forced his way into the United team last spring and hasn't looked back since.

“Everyone is delighted with Amad’s development; his quality on the ball, versatility and determination makes him a key part of the future of Manchester United," added Jason Wilcox.

“The best years of his career are ahead of him, and we all look forward to helping Amad to reach his immense potential and achieve success at the club in the coming seasons.”

Amad is still just 22 years old and his ceiling hasn't been reached. There is still untapped potential for Ruben Amorim to uncover and it will be fascinating to see where his future lies in United's new system because Amad has played as a wing-back and in one of the No.10 roles so far.

The simple answer might be Amad will switch between the roles, but Amorim has said he will eventually decide on a settled side, which suggests he might not chop and change.

Amad started Amorim's first game in charge against Ipswich Town as the right wing-back and provided a brilliant assist for Marcus Rashford to open the scoring after just 81 seconds.

Amad continued to play in that role until United faced Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League. He started as one of the No.10s, created chances for Rashford and Mason Mount, and played a crucial role in Rasmus Hojlund's equalsier, which was the start of United's turnaround in the Czech Republic.

Amorim was asked about Amad playing closer to goal and said: "I think he can be a very good player in that position. He’s a left footer, we need in this team left-footers to play in that role.

“I think in the first half he was coming for the ball too much, he needs to play near the goal, near the backline. Not there, but near, so it’s the first time and he will improve in the future.”

Amorim has subsequently kept Amad in a more prominent position and the youngster won a penalty and scored against Manchester City before scoring an equaliser against Liverpool.

Although Amad has excelled in that position, playing two natural full-backs in the wing-back roles isn't sustainable for the rest of the season, despite working at Anfield at the weekend.

Amorim is likely to name an unchanged team for the first time against Arsenal in the FA Cup third round, but once that fixture is done, Amad should be considered at wing-back again.

Amad's versatility is a huge asset and he can play both positions. It shouldn't be forgotten that he also looked brilliant at wing-back and that starting Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui in those roles against teams who defend deep was starting to become an issue for United.

United need more attacking threat against sides who deploy a low-block and playing Amad at wing-back in those scenarios is logical, given his quality going forward and creative flair.

So, Amad's long-term future might be in that role, despite his recent performances as a No.10.
