Nuno Mendes is reported to be a key transfer target for Manchester United with Ruben Amorim looking for a player who can play naturally in the left wing back position.

Currently, Diogo Dalot is often playing down the left despite him being right-footed meaning he has to cut inside onto his right foot which can stop the fluidity of attacking moves.

Mendes made his professional debut under the current United boss when at Sporting in 2020 aged just 17 at the time. He impressed in his short time in the first team at his boyhood club, making it into the Portuguese Primeira Liga team of the season, alongside his then teammates Pedro Porro and Joao Palhinha as Sporting won the title in his first full season as a regular professional.

Unsurprisingly, Europe’s top teams came knocking at Sporting’s door, all vying to secure the services of the talented youngster.

Mendes signed for PSG on loan with an option to buy with another league title success and team of the season inclusion coming in his first year in the French capital. His buyout clause was triggered by the French champions at the end of that season.

After winning his third league title in a row in 2023, Mendes missed much of the following season through injury but has come through the other side of that period off pitch to come back into the side regularly this campaign.

His willingness to get forward and help out the attack is something that would be greatly appreciated down United’s left side at present, especially given his natural aptitude for that side of the field with United being unable to have a natural left back available for much of the last two seasons due to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both being plagued by injury issues.

It could be argued United have taken the risk of signing players who have served under the current manager a few times too many in recent years, with many of Erik Ten Hag’s signings being individuals who have been under his supervision at previous clubs.

However, due to the nature of Ruben Amorim’s tactical set up, it is important to ensure that the first few signings that he makes are ones that easily allow the integration of new players into his system in the hope to alleviate any potential teething problems in respects to players taking too long to settle in.

At present new contract negotiations seem to be progressing slowly between PSG and the Portugal international with the Parisians wanting to extend his current deal that expires in 2026.

Mendes is believed to have a price tag worth north of £45million, however United may face stiff competition in the battle to sign the talented Portuguese full back.
