Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola paid a classy tribute to Goodison Park after his side triumphed there 2-0 against Everton in the ground’s last cup tie. A brace of mistakes from Blues captain James Tarkowski gifted the visitors two first half goals, ensuring David Moyes’ men were dumped out of the FA Cup.

For Iraola though, the result completed a hat-trick of wins for his side over Everton this season, including victories in both their visits in the historic final season for the first purpose-built football ground in England. The Basque boss said: “I’m happy to play here because I love the stadium. I think the atmosphere here is really nice, you feel the supporters very close to the pitch.

“It’s true that we’ve had good results but the day they beat us 3-0 was one of our worst games. On a positive side, the new stadium looks very nice from the things I’ve seen, it looks quite close also and I’m looking forward to playing in the new one because it looks nice.”

Everton failed to record a single shot on target when they last faced Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on January 4 in what proved to be Sean Dyche’s final game in charge. However, they went into this fourth round tie on the back of three consecutive victories in the Premier League so Iraola was pleased with how the Cherries were able to maintain their winning sequence against them.

The 42-year-old said: “I’m very satisfied. I think in the cup competitions, the most important thing is to go to the next round in the draw.

“Overall, I think the performance was very good, but it was probably two different halves. I think we were better in the first half, I think we played quite well on the ball and with our press we had good chances and scored the goals.

“The second half was completely different, they pushed us much more and I think we had to be in a low block for more time. But I think in a different way, but not as well as the first half, we competed well.

“We normally try, especially away from home, to start strong and be quite brave and go for the game. I think it’s good if the game is open for us and we try to play as fast as possible and when you have fresh legs, it’s always easier.

“In the second half we couldn’t find these moments and were calmer on the ball. Everton went a little more direct and we had to defend differently and I think we finished the game quite well.

“They hit both posts but when you have a little luck on your side, that helps you. I think we looked quite solid though considering how they pressed us.

“The cup is about the small details. When there is (the prospect of) extra time and penalties, it’s small things.

“We knew we had a difficult game. Everton are in a really good place so I’m pleased with how we played, especially in the first half as it’s not going to be easy to play Everton, particularly when they’re at home.”

Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring after winning and converting a penalty but Bournemouth’s passage into the last 16 was secured with a goal just before the interval from Daniel Jebbison, who was recalled from a loan spell at Championship side Watford on January 8 after strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal both suffered long-term injuries. Iraola was delighted with how the 21-year-old fared against one of the Premier League’s most imposing centre-back partnerships.

He said: “I think it was a good game from Jebbison, not only because he scored but it’s always difficult to play against Tarkowski and Branthwaite, it’s not going to be an easy game for you. Also, it made them uncomfortable.”
