Andy Murray left Chris Hoy in stitches as he recounted the most "horrible" experience of his tennis career.

The former world No.1, who retired from tennis last summer, is one of the sport's greatest ever players having won three Grand Slam titles, including two victories at Wimbledon and a US Open triumph.

But amongst all the glory, there were some low points for Murray during his playing days and perhaps none so more embarrassing than what transpired at the Australian Open a few years ago.

Appearing on Hoy's Sporting Misadventures podcast, the 37-year-old opened up on what happened in the aftermath of a marathon first-round match in Melbourne, when the measures he took to avoid cramping backfired spectacularly.

Setting the scene, Murray said: “A few years ago, I played a first round at the Australian Open. I played four hours and 40 minutes or something, and I won.

"At the end of the year beforehand, I’d been having some issues with cramping. So, in that match, it was the first tournament of the new year and I was nervous about potentially cramping again - so I’d been nailing the energy gels and sports drink and pickle juice.

"I finished the match, won the match and, when I came off the court, I got asked to join a drugs test straight off the court and I was like 'f***ing hell, really?' but I was in a good mood because I’d won."

However, Murray's good mood didn't last for long as he squeezed into a toilet cubicle with an anti-doping officer and set about providing a sample. As you might have expected, things soon went very wrong indeed.

"So I went straight from court and I needed to go to the toilet," he recalled. "So I went to do the drugs test. It’s not the most pleasant experience. I’ve gone into the cubicle with the guy and it’s a tight cubicle.

"Obviously, they ask you to pull your shorts down below your knees and lift your shirt up above your stomach so I assume they can make sure it’s you peeing into the thing.

"As I start to go, I’m like 'my stomach has gone here'. And I’m like 'I’ve got to sit down' and I’m sitting with a guy staring right in my face having like the most violent diarrhoea in front of this guy. It’s a horrible moment… and for him as well.”

The revelation left Hoy laughing and cringing in equal measure, with the Olympic legend crying 'Oh no!' as Murray built up to the horrific moment. "Oh man," he said, before surprisingly offering up a story to top it.

"It could have been worse," the former cyclist said. "An old team-mate of mine, years and years ago, he was in a similar situation. Meadowbank Stadium (in Edinburgh) it was, and he was driving back down to Preston where he lived.

"It was the end of the day, his mates were all waiting to go in the car but he still hadn't done his drugs test. He was doing the same thing as you, standing there trying to do his sample and... as he pushed... it all just came out.

"He still had his cycling shorts on but they were down round his ankles. He did the sample, finished the drugs test, handed it to the guy... pulled up his shorts... and said to the guy: 'I bet this happens all the time'.

"The guy was like 'No, it doesn't'. But he was so embarrassed that he just pulled up his shorts, signed the thing and just got out of there, jumped in the car and headed off. His mates in the car were like 'Have you farted?!' And he didn't tell them until they were halfway out on the road."

With both him and Murray in fits of laughter, Hoy added: "I'm not sure this will make the cut either!"
