Bath Rugby's head of the academy Andy Robinson said he was pleased with Bath Rugby's ability to "stick together" and beat Bedford Blues 43-26 at the Recreation Ground to keep their 100 percent record in the Premiership Rugby Cup going.

The Blue, Black and White second string were tested to their maximum against a spirited Championship outfit, who caused the home side plenty of issues with some wonderful attacking rugby in the second 40 to bring the deficit down to just five points having gone 26-0 down early in the contest.

However, five first-half tries gave Bath was enough of a lead to hold onto the victory, with those scores coming from Jasper Spandler, man-of-the-match Ciaran Donoghue, Tom Cowan, and a brace for Will Butt. Two second-half scores from Ruaridh McConnochie and Neil Le Roux meant the home side held on and maintained their perfect record in the cup this season, staying at the top of Pool D before they face Ampthill next weekend.

Bedford will be thoroughly pleased with their performance against a side who sit at the top of the Gallagher Premiership, with some brilliant attacking rugby catching Bath off guard. They were able to seal a try bonus point with their four fantastic scores, two coming from winger Matt Worley, with the other tries scored by Joey Conway and Joe Howard. But ultimately, they just did not have the quality to keep the Blue, Black and White at bay when they needed to the most.

Speaking post-match, Robinson spoke about how happy he was to see his side come through victorious, despite some difficult moments in the second 40.

"We started really well and got a really good lead at 26-0," the academy coach started by saying. "Then, we allowed Bedford back into the game with our errors. In the last 10 minutes, we finished well when we were put under a bit of pressure, so it's good to see the way that we're able to stick together and win the game.

"Rugby is a game of momentum at times, and if you don't take your chances, the opposition are going to get that belief, and credit to Bedford and the way they played the game. But also, they got a bit of belief and scored a couple of really good tries. I really enjoyed the game, it was a spectacular game of rugby."

It was another youthful side fielded by the Blue, Black and White for the cup competition, and they faced a lot of adversity in that second half as Bedford, who sit second in the Championship behind Ealing Trailfinders, tried to pull off a huge shock. But, when it mattered, the quality of the academy players shone through, which Robinson was extremely pleased about.

"I think it'll be really good to see how we started," continued Robinson. "It'll be really good for them to look at why the momentum changed, and it'll be really good then to think how together we were, because the way the bench came on, the replacements brought a bit of life to the team for us to finish off the game.

"Rugby is a simple game. You get forward, you attack the space, you look after the ball and you score tries, 26-0. You stop doing that, you can't score. And for us, we stopped doing the simple things really well.

"All rugby games, you're picking out things to grow and how it can grow for you as a team, and there's a number of parts there that we can look at to think, 'Right, this is what we can improve on, but actually, this is what we did really well,'" concluded the academy coach.

The Premiership Rugby Cup continues next weekend at the Rec, with Bath welcoming Ampthill as they will look to continue their unbeaten run in the competition and book a spot in the quarter-finals.
