Troy Deeney has admitted he would ‘pay a huge amount of money’ to watch Trent Alexander-Arnold after being blown away by his performance in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Ipswich Town. The England international claimed an assist, crossing for Cody Gakpo’s second goal of the day, as the Reds maintained their six-point lead at the top of the table.

The Liverpool vice-captain’s future at the club remains uncertain ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season, with Real Madrid interested in signing him on a Bosman transfer.

He was heavily criticised for his performance in his side’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United earlier this month, coming a week after the La Liga giants saw an approach to sign the defender in January rejected.

But he has been in impressive form since his difficult showing against the Red Devils. And having been at Anfield on Saturday for Liverpool’s win over Ipswich, Alexander-Arnold was one of three Reds players he included in his BBC Sport Team of the Week.

“This is the first time you're going to hear me say this and probably the last, I was at the game and I would pay a huge amount of money to watch that,” he said of Alexander-Arnold. “He was incredible: passing range, fitness, endeavour, defensive work as well as attacking work.

“He hit the bar. I thought he was excellent. Player of the weekend by a country mile.”

Deeney also selected goalscorers Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, as he insisted the Dutchman could have scored four or five goals rather than just two if he had not been withdrawn midway through the second half.

“I thought Luis Diaz would step up more if I'm being totally honest but Cody Gakpo just seems to be growing in confidence under Arne Slot,” he said. “(He’s) scoring vital goals. He came off after 68 minutes and he probably would have scored four or five if he'd stayed on.

“Szoboszlai is growing. He has high energy and gets shots off. You think back to last year and there were a lot of questions as to whether he could actually step up. He is getting into the 10 role and scoring goals.”
