Ange Postecoglou booed by Tottenham fans over decision that left commentators baffled
Ange Postecoglou faced the wrath of Tottenham fans after golden boy Lucas Bergvall was surprisingly subbed off against Newcastle United.
Teenage sensation Bergvall, 18, sparkled in midfield but was replaced by James Maddison just after the hour mark as Spurs trailed the visitors 2-1. The Sweden international was one of three subs, as Yves Bissouma and Timo Werner both made way for Pape Sarr and Son Heung-min. Yet while the home crowd applauded those changes, a large section of punters vented their anger at the impressive Bergvall being sacrificed.
TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher predicted that Spurs fans wouldn't be happy as he introduced the substitutions live on air. He said: "This is interesting, Ally. I'm not surprised by two of the changes. Bissouma is coming on for Sarr and Son is coming on for Werner.

"But he's bringing Maddison on for Bergvall who I think has had a really good start to the second-half here. He's certainly brought some energy. Karen [Carney] was talking about the run he made that led to Porro crossing for the Solanke goal." Rangers legend Ally McCoist - on co-comms - nodded: "I wouldn't disagree."
As Bergvall's number 15 went up on the board, Fletcher continued: "It's just interesting to see how the crowd react to Bergvall going off." Unsurprisingly, jeers erupted from various sections of the stadium as he pointed out: "They are not happy. I am not surprised, I have to say. It doesn't look like he needs to come off but is he only 18, he knows him better than anybody so it's certainly not reflective of his performance."
McCoist said: "No, you can't please them all, all of the time. He's played well and they are making their opinions clear, which they are entitled to do. What Ange has done, is he's brought on a player that can score goals and make goals. He's brought on a real bit of quality."
