Ange Postecoglou is going through a rather tricky spell as Tottenham head coach at present following four successive Premier League defeats. Making an instant impact at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following his appointment as head coach last June, things have been very up and down for the Australian since the beginning of November.

Even when Spurs have been winning games in 2024, they haven't been as convincing as they were in the opening months of the season. What has been concerning for Postecoglou and his team in recent months is the manner of some of their defeats and the goals they have shipped.

March's loss at Fulham was a truly dismal evening for the team, with Tottenham again extremely poor when they lost against Newcastle and Chelsea recently. Sunday's 4-2 defeat at Liverpool was another low point for the Lilywhites after conceding some very poor goals and allowing the Reds to race into a four-goal lead.

Due to the changes taking place at Tottenham ahead of the season and with Postecoglou trying to implement his football philosophy on his squad, many had Spurs down to make a slow start to the campaign but finish the term strongly to give everyone hope ahead of 2024/25. However, it has happened the other way around and that has seen Postecoglou questioned by some Tottenham fans as a result.

In order for the Lilywhites to compete at the top on a regular basis, Postecoglou has been consistent all season in saying that a lot of work still has to be done and the team will have to go through tough times in order to progress in the future. Tottenham are going through those tough times right now, with Liverpool and Arsenal also doing likewise under Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta when they first took on their respective jobs as both clubs opted for new projects.

The appointment of Klopp as Liverpool boss proved to be a masterstroke for the Merseyside club as he led them to their first Premier League title triumph, three Champions League finals, two EFL Cup trophies and one FA Cup. In terms of Arteta, the Spaniard has had the Gunners in title contention in the past two seasons and he also won the FA Cup in his first season as boss.

Both were given the necessary time to rebuild their teams and what was vital for both clubs is neither deviated away from their projects. Despite Postecoglou and Spurs' recent bad run of form, the Australian has in fact fared better than both Klopp and Arteta when it comes to the amount of points achieved from their first 35 Premier League games in charge.

Postecoglou leads the way on 60 points, Klopp comes a very close second on 58 points and Arteta is third on 50 points. Given what both Klopp and Arteta have accomplished since their first 35 Premier League games in charge of Liverpool and Arsenal, Daniel Levy and Tottenham will be hoping that Postecoglou can follow a similar path as the Australian looks to bring the good times back to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's game against Liverpool, Postecoglou admitted that changes need to take place at Tottenham if they are to progress. He also pointed to the fact that Liverpool and Arsenal's teams are now "almost unrecognisable" from when their first started out on their journeys.

“We need change, change has to happen," stated the 58-year-old. "You can’t want to alter your course, and quite dramatically for this club because we went down a certain direction and now we’re pivoting to a whole different direction, and expect the same people are going to be on that…It’s just not going to happen, so…

"We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. We can’t be there yet because it’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey. It’s not for the want of trying...it’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset, and that’s not for everyone.

"And the same way, whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they win the competition or have success, the team’s almost unrecognisable. That’s the reality, if you change. If you’re staying on the same course, of course, or a similar course…but we’ve done a major pivot here, so that definitely is the case, yeah.”
