Angry Brighton supporters go for Everton staff as David Moyes leads by example
Having run the gauntlet of the furious Brighton & Hove Albion fans who made a beeline for the media seating at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, ECHO Everton reporter Chris Beesley picks out some moments missed from the 1-0 victory in David Moyes' first away game back as Blues boss...
It wasn’t just on the pitch with the players where it kicked off at the Amex Stadium following the final whistle with some unsavoury scenes involving Brighton & Hove Albion supporters who didn’t like the taste of the sour grapes the defeat had brought them.
The cover of the matchday programme showed a cartoon illustration of the Seagulls’ winger Kaoru Mitoma breaking free from his chains with a rendering of Prince Rupert’s Tower, the Everton Lock-Up that appears on the club’s crest with the caption: “Catch him if you can!”

For all the torment that the Japanese international has caused the Blues in the past though, Moyes’ men kept him shackled on this occasion though as despite the hosts’ long periods of pressure, Fabian Hurzeler’s side were kept at arm’s length and mostly restricted to half-chances. Everton had to take their medicine when Albion rocked up on the opening day of Goodison Park’s historic final season and recorded a 3-0 victory, but their opponents were sore losers here and responded in cartoon fashion themselves.
A hysterical reaction of pantomime outrage from the stands and the bench alike to Joel Veltman quite clearly pawing the ball in his own area when shown on the big screen was followed up by fury after the game had finished.
When Everton make the move to their new 52,888-capacity stadium on the Mersey waterfront next season, the press box will be located right at the top of the West Stand but whoever designed the Amex Stadium thought it would be a good idea to let home spectators walk within inches of the media section as they make their way out.
One disgruntled Albion follower had already had a grumble towards ECHO reporters at half-time over the penalty but when the game finished, Everton staff sat behind us were on the receiving end of an unsavoury tongue-lashing with members of the angry mob with one branding them and their team: “An embarrassment.”
Taxi for Grandma
So said a post on social media, highlighting a more light-hearted side to the Brighton & Hove Albion fume. Everton are of course saying goodbye to the Grand Old Lady with the final fixture at Goodison Park in less than four months’ time.
But like the Blues’ home for the last 133 years, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned and she’s often more belligerent battleaxe than sweet matriarch and that also seemed the case with one passionate senior citizen caught on camera in the home end.
Stood up out of her seat, she dished out a double v-sign while offering some kind of rallying cry reminiscent of a tipsy Delia Smith with her “let’s be havin’ you” rallying cry, much to the amusement of many of those around her. The caption on the video read: “Come get your nan” while one reply claimed she resembled Irish comedy character Mrs Brown.
VAR copycats
Albion fans really were the gift that kept on giving this weekend. The press box at the Amex Stadium is also in close proximity to the pitchside monitor that referee Tim Robinson consulted when advised to go and take a look by Graham Scott back at Stockley Park.
EVERTON KEEP THEIR HEADS: Chris Beesley's video verdict
As the on-pitch official viewed the footage, some home supporters made money gestures towards him like they were desperately trying to offer him some kind of bribe for the decision to go their way. This kind of silly stunt had already been done by Nottingham Forest followers at the City Ground the previous weekend when Anthony Taylor had disallowed a goal in their 3-2 win over Southampton the previous Sunday.
Keep your wallets in your pockets lads. Reaching out with your arms can get you in trouble – just ask Joel Veltman.
Moyes leads by example
If only more in the Amex Stadium acted like Everton's dignified manager Moyes, who kept his head while those around him were losing theirs. Just as he did in a 4-3 win at Derby County in his first away game as Blues boss almost 23 years ago, the Scot picked up a precious three points in dramatic fashion.
Some of the other Brighton complaints surrounded supposed Everton time-wasting but despite there ending up being 18 additional minutes played in total, the hosts still couldn’t find a way through.
The board went up for eight at the 90-minute mark but when defenders Vitalii Mykolenko – who had earlier been booed after going down when elbowed in the head by Joao Pedro – and Jake O’Brien both hit the deck in separate incidents, Moyes was heard to be telling them both to get up.
Maupay appearance
Just when you thought you’d seen the back of Neal Maupay, the diminutive striker keeps turning up again like a bad penny. Despite his wretched one goal in 32-game record in a royal blue jersey and him technically still being an employee of the club until the end of this season, the on-loan Marseille player took to social media following the 2-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest last month to proclaim: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”
MASSIVE WIN: Joe Thomas' video verdict
The 28-year-old is more fondly remembered at Albion though – who somehow convinced Kevin Thelwell to part with £15million for his services – and he was shown finding the back of the net in a highlights video put out before kick-off.
The bond brought back memories of the scene in the film The Damned United where Peter Taylor is trying to convince a reluctant Brian Clough to take charge of the Seagulls, only for him to reply: “We cared about Hartlepool and Derby, we’re from the north. What do we care about Brighton? Bloody southerners... look where we are – we’re almost in France!”
