Anthony Gordon: England winger injures chin falling off bike at Euro 2024

Anthony Gordon is training as usual with England and fit to face Slovakia at Euro 2024 this weekend despite suffering cuts to his face, hands and legs after falling off a bike.

The Newcastle winger was pictured working with the rest of Gareth Southgate’s squad at the Three Lions’ tournament base in Blankenhain on Thursday, sporting a nasty graze on his chin suffered during a minor mishap that occurred on the team’s day off on Wednesday.

Gordon also had scrapes to his nose, hands and knee, with reports that he had fallen from his bike during a ride with team-mates at the Weimarer Land Spa & Golf Resort near Erfurt in Germany.

Thankfully it was nothing serious for the 23-year-old, who was mostly left with just wounded pride as he became subject to gentle teasing jibes from his England team-mates.

"I actually wasn't there. I heard about it and I was actually talking to him, but not paying attention to him,” England defender Marc Guehi said during a media appearance on Thursday afternoon.

"Then he turned around and I saw that massive gash on his chin!

"But he's OK, he's OK, but he just fell off his bike. It's been a bit of a joke in camp but he's doing well."

Gordon will be vying to start for England in Sunday’s last-16 tie against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen, having earned his first minutes of the tournament off the bench in Wednesday night’s turgid goalless draw with Slovenia that saw Southgate’s misfiring side progress through to the knockout phase as Group C winners.

Phil Foden has temporarily left the camp in order to return home for the birth of his third child, and while he should be back to play some part this weekend, Southgate may opt to freshen up his attack with Chelsea’s Player of the Season Cole Palmer also hoping to start after an impressive substitute’s cameo against Slovenia.

Gordon has earned four senior England caps in his career so far, starting friendlies against Brazil and Iceland at Wembley and also coming off the bench against Belgium back in March in addition to that brief appearance against Slovenia on Tuesday night.

The former Everton winger has become a real option for Southgate after a superb first full season at Newcastle that saw him score 12 goals and register 11 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies under Eddie Howe.
