Anthony Gordon to Man City transfer reality clear amid Newcastle United's PSR battle
Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is reportedly attracting the attention of reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
The Daily Mirror claims Pep Guardiola is an admirer of the Magpies talisman, along with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. City look set to invest heavily into their squad, having struggled to keep pace with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title so far this season.
However, Newcastle are in a strong position when it comes to any future transfer negotiations for Gordon having fended off interest from Liverpool in the summer. The England international was linked with a move away from St. James' Park, with Eddie Howe's side struggling to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Nonetheless, they found a workaround with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh both departing for substantial fees. Despite speculation around his future, the Magpies would tie Gordon down to a new long-term contract in October having impressed following his £45million move from Everton back in January 2023.
Speaking after signing a new deal, he said: "I just think the club's in a great place. Since the takeover it's just been up and up. Me and the gaffer are a perfect match in terms of style of play. I love it here.
"I'm very happy here, I like living here, the team is very suited to me - and I'm here to win a trophy. The short story is we need to win a trophy. Winning a trophy here would be unbelievable because the fans have waited so long. To be part of that team who finally does it is a massive goal of mine.
"We (my family and I) have always felt settled because Geordies are so easy-going and so welcoming, very easy to speak to and always want the best for you. It's a very easy place to come and live, I think. I feel very connected to everyone - teammates, fans and everyone involved."
The report claims that City are unlikely to make an approach to sign Gordon in the current January transfer window, despite their current struggles, and will only do so after a 'raft of departures' from the Etihad in the summer.
Newcastle head coach, Howe, has revealed the Toon may have to sell players in order to comply with the Premier League's PSR rules and to continue on their upward trajectory, but reiterated the club's desire to keep their best players at the club.
“The days when teams don’t sell big players are gone,” said Howe ahead of last month's trip to Brentford. “I think our revenue streams aren’t where we want them to be. We’re still trying to grow them, so I think that trading in and out is going to be essential.
“Hopefully it’s not going to be players that we’re forced to sell but you can’t guarantee anything. The issue with PSR and our position is that nothing is clearcut. Nothing is absolutely fixed; there will be lots of twists and turns in January. But we want to try and improve the squad.”
