Armagh All-Ireland hero Ronan Clarke is set to feature in the upcoming Laochra Gael series, which returns for a 23rd series later this month.

The popular GAA documentary series on TG4 will feature eight legendary figures from Gaelic football, hurling, Ladies football and Camogie over the coming weeks.

Clarke helped Armagh claim their maiden All-Ireland success aged just 19 back in 2002 and was named Young Footballer of the Year that season.

Of the most naturally talented footballers the Orchard County ever produced, his playing career was subsequently blighted by injury.

The Pearse Óg clubman woke up in intensive care five days after suffering a head injury after colliding with goalposts, an injury which precipitated the end of his Gaelic football playing days.

With contributions from his family, former Armagh teammate Oisin McConville, Fermanagh’s Barry Owens and Tyrone’s Mark Harte as well as Irish Star journalist Kieran Cunningham, the episode featuring Clarke will air on Thursday, February 13.

The new season gets under way with an episode featuring Tipperary hurler Pádraic Maher with Kerry’s Marc Ó Se and Donegal’s Eamon McGee also set to feature in this series.

Ahead of the new Laochra Gael series, GAA president Jarlath Burns said: “I warmly welcome the announcement of yet another series of Laochra Gael showcasing as it does some of the greatest players from the wider Gaelic games family.

“TG4 and Nemeton’s support of our games has been one of the hallmarks of its success story and it is something we value highly. Away from their innovative live match day coverage, Laochra Gael adds greatly to their offering promoting both the language and our games and all through the prism of great scéalta and great storytelling.

“The celebration of a 23rd series speaks for itself in terms of longevity, and I look forward to seeing the latest hour-long offerings. Well done to all involved in this latest project.”
