Army vs Navy uniforms, explained: Black Knights, Midshipmen jerseys for 'America's Game'

College football's preeminent rivalry has arrived: Army vs. Navy.

For the 125th time in both programs' rich history, the Black Knights (11-1 overall, 8-0 in AAC play) and Midshipmen (8-3, 6-2 in AAC play) will clash against each other on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET inside Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

The meeting of Army-Navy also means two new distinct and meaningful alternate uniforms will be debuted — one of many looked forward to traditions in "America's Game." Army has beaten Navy in six of the last eight meetings since 2016.

This year's alternate uniforms for the Black Knights and Midshipmen will pay homage to the legacies of the 101st Airborne Division and the Jolly Rogers, respectively.

Saturday's Army-Navy Game will determine who will take home the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy and potentially earn a visit to the White House in the spring. It's currently in the possession of the Black Knights after going 2-0 against Navy and Air Force last season.

Here's what you need to know about both Army and Navy's uniforms for the the 125th meeting of the Army-Navy Game on Saturday:

Navy's Jolly Rogers uniform for Army-Navy game

The Midshipmen's uniform for the 2024 Army-Navy Game is called "the Jolly Rogers." The uniform was designed by Under Armour, which is the official uniform provider of Navy.

As noted by Navy's press release, the Jolly Rogers are the most lethal and history-rich squadron in Naval Aviation. It is the second time that Navy will be honoring the Jolly Rogers, who were established in 1943, in the Army-Navy game with their uniforms.

The tagline for the Jolly Rogers is "Fear the Bones." The Jolly Rogers are "freedoms guardians in the sky," as referenced in Navy's uniform release video.

The last time the Midshipmen honored the Jolly Rogers came in 1962 when "Captain America," Roger Staubach, led Navy to a 34-14 win.

Here are some notes on Navy's "Jolly Rogers" uniforms:

  • The helmet includes bits and pieces of past and present Jolly Rogers aviator helmets.

  • The color blocking on the jersey mirrors the iconic design of the Jolly Rogers aircraft.

  • Numbers on the uniform mirror the aircraft side number on the fuselage and the trailing edge flap of the wings of the aircrafts used by the Jolly Rogers.

  • The Jolly Rogers tagline of "Fear the Bones" is included on the back of the helmet.

  • The angled stripes on the sleeves and helmet pay tribute to the nine aircraft's the Jolly Rogers have flown.

  • The gloves feature the Jolly Rogers skull-and-crossbones insignia, which is seen together when both gloves overlap each other.

  • The pants feature micro text that represents the six Jolly Rogers squadrons: VF-17, VF-5B, VF-61, VF-84, VF-103 and VFA-103.

Army's Screaming Eagles uniform for Army-Navy game

The Black Knights uniform for 2024 Army-Navy Game is called "Screaming Eagles." The uniform, which was designed by Nike, is black as it reflects "the canopy of fog and snow giving away to the shadows beneath the snow-covered pine forest in the Ardennes."

The uniform itself pays homage to the 101st Airborne Division, particularly its history during World War II at the 1944 Battle of the Bulge.

As noted on Army's website, the calling card and motto of the Screaming Eagles was "Rendezvous with Destiny." Over three weeks in the cold, the 101st Airborne Division refused to surrender to the Nazis.

The typography on the back of the Black Knights' uniforms is a version of Anthony McAuliffe's, the acting 101st Airborne Division's commander, reply of "Nuts!" (or "Go to Hell!) to the Nazi commander asking the 101st to surrender.

Here are some additional notes on Army's "Screaming Eagles" uniform:

  • The star patch on the jersey is "The Invasion Star," which was used on American aircraft and vehicles to help with identification on the battlefield.

  • The seven gaps on the "The Invasion Star" patch represent the seven road at Bastogne.

  • The patch on the left sleeve is the patch of the 101st Airborne, while the patch on the right sleeve is the American flag that was worn on the jumpsuit of the 101st paratroopers.

  • Helmets will include a parachute logo and "Screaming Eagles" on the front.

  • Players will be randomly assigned one of four card suit helmets: "clubs," "diamonds," "heart" and "spades," with each card suit representing a symbol for the 101st paratroopers and glider troops to use to identify respective units.
