Arne Slot thought it wasn't going to be Liverpool's day when shot after shot was taken without the Reds scoring but then Darwin Nunez stepped up to score a stoppage-time brace.

Liverpool had 37 shots in total but it took until the 91st minute to beat Mark Flekken. Nunez himself had missed one big chance just after he came, while Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were not at their best.

"Of course I had doubts about [us scoring] because before we scored the two goals it felt as if I was looking at the same game again and again and again and in the same pattern," Slot said during his post-match press conference.

"I said it already a few times in other interviews that against [Manchester] United, everybody was focused on the [Harry] Maguire chance. But [in] the seven minutes before, we had three open chances.

"So many times in recent weeks — against Tottenham as well — we missed a lot of chances, and against [Nottingham] Forest we missed a lot. So, it would have been a bit surprising if I felt, 'OK, after all these chances missed today, we will probably score in the last five minutes.' But the players proved me wrong again."

After Liverpool picked up a late winner, Arsenal could only draw 2-2 with Aston Villa. It means that the Reds are now six points clear in the Premier League title race, still with a game in hand to play.

Liverpool.com says: Slot is right that Liverpool has not been as prolific recently and that will need to change. You would like to think that Nunez could take plenty of confidence from his late goals. It will be interesting to see how he performs in the Champions League against Lille midweek, assuming that he gets a start.
