Darwin Nunez has both thrilled and frustrated supporters in equal measure during his time at Liverpool, claiming the spotlight for all sorts of reasons. But it was his turn to frustrate fans in the ECHO's comments section on Wednesday night as he squandered a golden chance to put the club further ahead of the chasing pack in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool drew 2-2 with Aston Villa, leaving them eight points ahead, but handing Arsenal a route back with their game in hand. Head coach Arne Slot made the call to replace Diogo Jota with Nunez with a hour gone - hoping to provide a different threat to the Villa defence after Trent Alexander-Arnold's equaliser.

Nunez missed a gilt-edged chance, shooting over the crossbar when faced with an open net courtesy of Dominic Szoboslai's unselfish pass. Together with other underwhelming play, it made for a night some would rather forget.

Slot has revealed that he will hold talks with the striker about his response, saying: "It is not the chance, but the 20 minutes afterwards that I will talk to Darwin about. Yes, I will tell him that [he still has a major part to play] as well. I will tell him that you can miss a chance, but you cannot miss out on work-rate."

Slot isn't the only one who felt frustrated, with some taking the opportunity to vent their thoughts on the striker. Reader Mon56 says: "Why we are keeping Nunez for this long? He's costing us games ship him. I can't stand watching Liverpool play when he's in the team, he frustrates me, and I'm sure his teammates are equally frustrated. Get [Alexander] Isak from Newcastle and we'll be firing."

Commenter Mando6 agrees: "Nunez is simply not good enough, most of us have known this for a long time. If we can get anywhere near back what we paid for him, we'll have done well."

Wudwudley says: "What happened to the Nunez who scored two great goals against Newcastle last season? The confidence he had has been well and truly drained out of him."

Leachater writes: "Nunez didn't even look surprised that he missed. How much longer before he's sold?"

It wasn't all doom and gloom for others, though. Bren1971 says: "That's a good draw, why is everyone so negative? We've been beaten once, we're still ahead of the rest. Plenty of time to go, but being hard to beat is the best habit to have. I'm backing Darwin to get through this... support them and stop moaning."

Sadios agrees: "Lucky to get a point or unlucky not to win that. Either way, probably a fair result in the end, as Villa were hard to beat as expected. Still, frustrating to miss those clear chances."
