The January transfer window is just days away with speculation over possible comings and goings at clubs already rife. It’s no different at Liverpool with the club sitting at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds were able to extend their lead at the top of the league on Boxing Day, with Chelsea falling to defeat against Fulham. Arne Slot’s men then came from behind to come out as 3-1 winners against Leicester City.

The quick turnaround in fixtures means that Liverpool are back in action today (Sunday). The team travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham United (5.15pm kick-off).

While focus will be on matters on the pitch, eyes will also start to turn to the transfer window. With that in mind, here is a look at some of the latest stories around Anfield over the last 24 hours.

Arne Slot blow

Slot could be handed a blow with reports of first team coach John Heitinga emerging as a candidate for the vacant managerial position at West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies are on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Carlos Corberan.

Reports, via the Mirror, claim that Heitinga is a frontrunner for the job. The former Everton man arrived in the summer as part of Slot's backroom staff, and he has been praised by the Liverpool boss.

"One of the reasons why we work together is because we have so much in common, if it’s about playing style, game model or the changes we make during the game," he said.

"John Heitinga is now here with me for the first half season and I couldn’t have wished for more. Very, if I say, talented, I do not even rate him high enough because he’s more than that already, he’s been a head coach himself but he’s still young.

"He grew into our staff from the start in a very good manner. He has the same idea about football, that’s why I chose him to come to us as well. But the way he is with the boys is very positive. All the things we do we do together."

Mo Salah prediction

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has predicted that Mohamed Salah could win the Ballon d’Or, becoming just the second African player to do so. The Egyptian scored his 16th goal in 17 Premier League appearances this season in the 3-1 Boxing Day win over Leicester City.

Writing in his column for the Telegraph, Carragher said: "Salah’s goal and assist tally is consistently amazing and there is no bigger admirer of his talent than me, regardless of what his fan club on social media might say.

"Salah has stated in the past that he wants to become the second African to win the Ballon d’Or after George Weah did so in 1995. I think he has a great chance.

"The judges usually pick the player of the tournament at a World Cup or European Championship. With no international tournament this year, it will probably be dictated by the outstanding players in the Champions League.

"Liverpool may have to win, or at least reach the final for Salah’s ambition to be realised. But no attacker in Europe is currently as productive as him, and it is usually the forwards who win."
