Arne Slot would be left with unnecessary Liverpool headache if double transfer decision sanctioned
The summer transfer window already looks to be a busy one for Liverpool and Arne Slot. The first two windows under the head coach have been relatively quiet with the only two arrivals being winger Federico Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili who is currently on loan with Valencia.
Slot has already admitted that is expecting the club to do more business when the summer transfer re-opens at the end of the season. Speaking to the BBC he said: “Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League. I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level.
“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well. There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.

“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”
What area the Reds need to strengthen in could depend on potential departures. Uncertainty around the futures of the three big players out of contract in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, is also likely to have a big say.
Some reports over the weekend claim that both Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota could leave the club at the end of the season with the duo becoming ‘frustrated’ at their game time under Slot.
Diaz has seen Cody Gakpo move ahead of him in the pecking order since the early weeks of the campaign. Jota’s absence has been more due to injury, although he hadn't started the previous six Premier League games before a muscle problem ruled him out against Brentford and Ipswich.
While the links with the duo possibly moving away is currently just speculation, it does raise a question for Slot and Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window. If the two are unhappy with their game time, should he let them go?
If he does then it would make what is already a big summer even bigger. Selling both players would be a huge risk for the Reds, especially with uncertainty over Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk .
Should the Reds have to replace the three out of contract players, having to also bring in replacements for Diaz and Jota will add that extra pressure to the summer window. It would amount to a massive summer rebuild in just the head coach’s second season at Anfield.
With Liverpool favourites to lift the current Premier League title, too many changes just a matter of months after potentially lifting the trophy could undo the work that has been put in this season, and make retaining the title just that bit harder - if they were to win silverware thise season.
In an ideal world, all five players would stay beyond the summer, with Slot able to add to his squad. That does seem unlikely, especially around Alexander-Arnold who has been heavily linked with Real Madrid.
Keeping hold of both Diaz and Jota is something that Liverpool should do in the summer, unless they know they will get replacements in who can add the same, or even more quality. That’s not going to be an easy thing to do.
