'I saw the same thing' - Arne Slot loved what Virgil van Dijk did in 'intense' Liverpool win over Tottenham
Arne Slot has revealed what pleased him most about Liverpool’s 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds overturned a 1-0 aggregate deficit to book their place in the League Cup final on Thursday night.
Goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk clinched an emphatic victory as Liverpool dominated Ange Postecoglou’s side. Boasting 64% possession, Spurs did not even manage to register a shot on target.
And rather than his side’s attacking display, Slot was most impressed by their work-rate and how they limited a normally potent Tottenham in front of goal at the other end.

“Yeah, very impressive. I think I am not saying anything strange that Tottenham is conceding goals because they have so many injury problems,” he said. “That is probably the main reason why they are conceding goals.
“But they are always able to score goals as well and create a lot. And for us to have so much of the ball that it takes them 80 minutes to have a shot on target doesn’t tell you anything about Tottenham.
“It should tell you a lot about our work rate without the ball. I think that is what stood out for me, playing against a team that is so good at creating chances. Only conceding one shot is, in the end, a good accomplishment.”
Meanwhile, Slot also paid tribute to his side’s mentality as he referenced how Virgil van Dijk was spotted urging his team-mates to quickly get back and restart proceedings after initially taking the lead in the first half.
“I saw the same thing. I think that was a moment where you could see how we played for the whole game,” he said. “It was so intense. The players were ready for it, the fans were ready for it.
“We all simply wanted one thing and that was to go through to the final. That mentality we showed from the first to last second, was probably well-shown in that moment as well.”
