Arne Slot has predicted that Ruben Amorim will get Manchester United back up the Premier League table, having insisted Liverpool’s rival is better than it’s currently showing.

The Reds will host United on Sunday at Anfield, and the two clubs could not be much further apart as they head into their second meeting of the season. In fact, things only seem to have got worse at Old Trafford since Liverpool eased to a 3-0 win there in September.

Erik ten Hag has since been fired after leading the club to its worst ever start in a Premier League season, but his replacement has not been able to revive their fortunes.

Amorim has won just two Premier League games since taking charge in November, with United having lost five of its last six outings in the league. They find themselves languishing in 14th, 23 points behind leaders Liverpool, and just seven ahead of the relegation zone.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s fixture though, Slot insisted that United is in a false position in the table, having brushed off any suggestions that he could look to make changes for the game.

“It's a big game,” Slot said during his press conference. “For me, I said it before the first fixture and one more time, they have much better players than the league table shows.

“It will take a while, maybe, for Ruben Amorim, but they will definitely go up, and they are much, much better than the league table shows.”

Amorim’s struggles have even led the former Sporting boss to suggest his new side could be involved in the relegation battle this season. It’s a far cry from the success he enjoyed back in Portugal, which saw him being heavily linked with the Liverpool job last season.

Slot of course went on to be named as Jurgen Klopp’s successor, with Amorim having to wait a little while longer for United to come calling. With things not going to plan for him though, the Liverpool boss has admitted to feeling a little sorry for his counterpart.

“Every manager has sympathy with others because we all know how hard this job is,” Slot said. “A lot of pressure in this job, we like it otherwise we wouldn't do it. He did so well at Sporting. He has a good squad of players and he will eventually bring the best out of them.”

Liverpool.com says: We don’t think there’ll be many Liverpool fans taking the same approach this weekend, although Slot is clearly just making sure he doesn’t say anything that could come back to bite him. The reality is the Reds are lightyears ahead of United at the moment, and hopefully that will be reflected on Sunday.
