Arne Slot nears Liverpool announcement after 'behind-the-scenes' problem resolved

Arne Slot has seemingly just moved a step closer to being officially announced as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool after Sipke Hulshoff resigned from his role with the Netherlands.

Hulshoff currently serves as Slot’s assistant at Feyenood but holds a dual role, splitting his time between the Dutch club and the Netherlands national team, where he also acts as Ronald Koeman’s deputy.

The Mirror reported on Monday that Hulshoff’s international commitments ahead of Euro 2024 had delayed Liverpool from finalising their new manager's arrival, as well as complicated negotiations with Slot wanting his fellow Dutchman to join him at Anfield.

However, such issues have seemingly now been resolved after the KNVB confirmed that Hulshoff has stood down from his position with the Netherlands ahead of this summer’s European Championships. Dwight Lodeweges will replace him, taking his place in Koeman’s backroom staff as the Dutch continue their preparations for Euro 2024.

In an official statement, the Dutch national team confirmed: “Dwight Lodeweges will immediately join the technical staff of the Dutch national team. The 66-year-old Lodeweges, who has a commitment up to and including the European Championship, replaces Sipke Hulshoff, who has informed the KNVB that he will stop as assistant national coach. Lodeweges knows the ins and outs of the Dutch team.

“When Koeman was appointed national coach for the first time in March 2018, he was also his assistant. The Canadian-born Lodeweges was part of the technical staff until EURO 2020/21.

“With the arrival of Lodeweges, the coaching staff for UEFA EURO 2024 now looks as follows: Ronald Koeman (national coach), Erwin Koeman, Dwight Lodeweges and Michael Reiziger (assistant national coach), Patrick Lodewijks and Khalid Benlahsen (goalkeeping coach).”
