Arne Slot sent 'late drama' plea as Liverpool fail to take Premier League chance
The final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park ended in a draw, with a dramatic late Everton goal and four red cards dished out - and Liverpool fans in the ECHO comments section want Arne Slot to find a way to cut out late mistakes that may cost the club the Premier League title.
The teams were even for much of the match, with Alexis Mac Allister cancelling out Beto's 11th-minute opener. Liverpool went ahead thanks to a calm finish from Mohamed Salah, coming within minutes of securing the three points and the bragging rights of winning more derbies at Everton's stadium than they have, but a shock James Tarkowski volley at the death was deemed onside, and the Reds' hearts sank.
Liverpool failed to take full advantage of their game in hand, after giving much of their senior starting squad a break during the FA Cup fixture at the weekend. Second-placed Arsenal have their own problems, but the gap is less insurmountable that it seemed a week ago.

There are parts of Liverpool's game to work to secure the title, say some fans. Reader Lovemedo says: “We could have been 13 points clear by now and potentially have wrapped up the league in March if we had managed to hold our lead in the final minutes against Newcastle, United, and this game.
"Slot needs to adapt to the late-game drama of the Premier League. When our defence looks tired and disorganised, he should bring on another defensive midfielder to play a double pivot, stabilizing the team and protecting the lead. He failed to do so in the aforementioned games.”
Commenter CanuckfromBootle thinks it's all in the physical side of the game: “I'd have taken the smash and grab of course but let's be honest - we were very poor. Simply can't impose ourselves at all when it all gets a bit tasty. Got dragged down to their level - again - but at least they gave it a good go.
"Being saying it since last season - we need a bigger, stronger, quicker version of MacAllister in the middle. Dropped four points now with the last kick of the game and we could probably do with them - not being all doom and gloom, but we'll drop more points away from home because we simply lack physicality.
"If we play like that with six days off how are we going to fare with nearly a month off in March? Sunday's gamble could ultimately prove more costly than we thought. Time to man up - during the game.”
Still, others think the refereeing cost them. Derek57keeper writes: “Frustrating for sure but only six attempts, four on goal must be the lowest for the season so far. Sums up the problem in this game. Still seven points in the lead. Can't drop many more but Arsenal at Anfield will be crucial.
"BTW the referee had a very poor game, English refs seem to think their performance is judged on how many yellows cards they issue. Quite the contrary. French ref Turpin in City Real game yesterday was flawless, you hardly noticed him. Showed not a single card. Europe has a few of the so-called elite level refs. We certainly don't.”
Doyoun writes: “No bite in midfield. Szobo can run around - great, but he doesn't tackle and looked scared at times. Needed more leaders out there. To be honest, I'd have taken a draw beforehand. Seven points clear and a draw is good against 12 men. Some big games coming up. Let's regroup and go again.”
Jimm says: “When you play with fire you get burned. Why the hell is Alisson, for the last two mins of the game, kicking long balls when for 95mins they were constructing from behind? Virgil was poor and lot of players under par. A really disappointing result for sure.”
Original75 writes: “Very poor performance from Liverpool from the beginning, we lost the midfield battle, no control and not winning the second ball, at the end we didn’t deserve to win.”
