Arne Slot wants Premier League rule change because of 'big problem' he's identified at Liverpool
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has managed his side's injury situation well this season. Fighting on all fronts and with the Reds being the clear favorite to win the Premier League title, things couldn't be going much better.
Nonetheless, Slot has spoken on three different occasions — all within a period of about 48 hours — about the same rule change he would like to see implemented. Jurgen Klopp wanted more substitutions available per game; his successor wants to be able to name more players on the bench.
"We want to compete for every trophy and competition so we cannot complain about the amount of games," Slot said during today's press conference ahead of Plymouth. "But I said three days ago, if you are a club that plays so many games then you have to have 22 or 23 players.

"To go to a game with 20, no problem, but you want to create something and give academy players a chance once in a while. It's a big problem for academy players. If I have 23 players yesterday then maybe James McConnell or Rio Ngumoha can play a little bit.
"And don't tell me it's not a disadvantage for smaller clubs. I don't have nine great subs and then 12 great subs; it's just chances for younger players like every other league in Europe."
Slot said the same thing before and after the Spurs game, clearly with the idea right at the front of his mind. "That is one of the only things I don't understand here in England," he said in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday.
"Everywhere around the world, and in Europe as well when we play Champions League, we can take 23 players to the game. We are here in a country where we play the most games — especially the likes of Aston Villa, us, Arsenal, Chelsea, all the ones that are playing in Europe — and we have the League Cup over here and we have the FA Cup. We play so, so many games, so if you are able to play all these games you need a big squad.
"That seems to fair to me and then one of the things that is so important for a manager, so to pick the first XI is difficult, to tell someone that he is not even in the squad makes it even harder. So, I don't understand why we don't go to 23 in this country because this country plays the most games everywhere around the world and we only have 20 players that we can take to the games."
That was twice inside a period of a couple of days — both times at the AXA Training Centre — and he said the same thing in the intervening period, this time at Anfield. "There are many games to be played," Slot said on Sky Sports after beating Spurs 4-0.
"We were lucky — or maybe not lucky — that we were already qualified after six games in the Champions League so we were still able to rotate. This is a league where you play the most games but you are only able to take 20 players.
"If you play so many games you need more than 20 players. If a club like us should always have 20, 21, 22 first-team players and behind it we can take more academy players then a game like today would have been ideal."
The number of substitutes allowed to be named on the teamsheet increased from seven to nine in 2022. In Europe, clubs are permitted to put up to 12 on the bench, though that number is rarely reached.
While it would benefit the young players at Liverpool from time to time, though, how often will Slot have the luxury of only having a couple of injuries? More often than not, it isn't likely to be a big issue.
Ultimately, if that is Slot's biggest complaint at this point in his Liverpool tenure, things are going pretty smoothly. More subs might be nice, but in Premier League terms, it's a minor and first world problem.
