Arne Slot warned of Liverpool problem that Jurgen Klopp knows all too well
Arne Slot has Liverpool in a great position this Christmas - but the Reds know only too well that can mean very little at the end of the season.
Slot has enjoyed a sensational first six months in charge at Anfield, having won 21 of his 25 games in charge across all competitions, and his side is on course for silverware in 2025. The Reds will spend Christmas Day top of the Premier League, where they hold a four-point advantage over nearest challengers Chelsea, while Arsenal sits six points behind, and Manchester City already looks to be out of the running.
Not only that, but Liverpool still holds a game in hand, meaning that advantage could grow even more, although they will have to wait until February to play the postponed Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Nevertheless, being top of the table during the festive period is a good sign for Slot and his players - although it doesn’t guarantee them anything yet. There is still more than half the season to go, and plenty of games for the Reds to navigate before anything can be decided. And as Chris Sutton pointed out on the BBC’s 'Monday Night Club', they might not have things all their own way.
"Because of the nature and the strength of the Premier League, they will have a blip,” Sutton said. “What was remarkable about them on Sunday is they looked really refreshed and dynamic and powerful – the scoreline flattered Tottenham in the end, it could've been double figures."
As good as Liverpool has been, a ‘blip’ is almost unavoidable for any team - just ask Jurgen Klopp. The former Liverpool boss knows better than most that being top of the table at Christmas doesn’t guarantee you will be claiming the title at the end of the season. The Reds were actually at the summit during the festive period for three years in a row under the German, but only managed to win the league once in that time during the 2019/20 campaign.
It might be harsh to consider it a blip, considering Liverpool did actually go unbeaten during this period, but the run between facing Leicester on January 30 and Everton on March 3 in 2019 saw the Reds draw four out of six games. Considering they would go on to finish just a point behind City, that run proved crucial.
And fans won’t need reminding of the blip that occurred in the 2020/21 campaign, with Liverpool taking just three points from five games directly after Christmas, while a run of six defeats in seven games from the start of February - not helped of course by an injury crisis in defense - ended any hopes of defending their title once and for all.
Even last season, the Reds were just one point behind leaders Arsenal at Christmas, and would actually leapfrog the Gunners on Boxing Day to put themselves in pole position, only for a run of one win in five games in April - including those painful defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton - to dash Klopp’s hopes of leaving with one final title.
Slot will of course hope he doesn’t experience such pain, but chances are Liverpool will face a sticky patch at some point. We already seen how the gap to their rivals can shrink after back-to-back draws with Newcastle and Fulham. Fingers crossed the Reds can keep Chelsea and Arsenal at arm’s length, and any blip doesn’t prove to be crucial.
