Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has batted away talk of an impending Premier League title triumph - as his comments mirrored remarks from predecessor Jurgen Klopp during his tenure at Anfield.

The Reds currently sit top of both the domestic and continental standings after a swashbuckling start to the campaign which has saw them pick up 22 wins from 26 outings so far. Just short of halfway through the domestic league season, the Merseysiders boast a seven point advantage and a game in hand over nearest challengers Chelsea.

Having topped the table on Christmas Day, history would suggest that the current frontrunners will take some stopping when it comes to the title. Of the 31 previous Premier League campaigns, the team that has topped the standings on Dec. 25 has gone on to win the league on 16 occasions.

Either way, Liverpool boss Slot remains focused on the task at hand as he insisted he is blocking out the noise despite growing expectations that his team could be set for a glorious end to the campaign. The former Feyenoord helmsman instead asserted that his side will be able to handle the pressure as the second half of the season beckons.

Providing insight in to his mindset, he said following the win 3-1- over Leicester City on Boxing Day: "You're sitting in front of the Liverpool manager, so there is always pressure at this club. If we are one, two, three, four or five in the table, if you work at a big club like Liverpool, there is always pressure.

"It's not so strange for a club like us to be top of the league but we know how many good teams there are in this league and they are able to win almost every game as well. So there's no extra pressure, there is always pressure if you work at a club like Liverpool."

His efforts to distance himself from the growing expectations were reminiscent of previous remarks from the man he replaced in the Anfield hotseat. Speaking after a key victory over Manchester United en route to winning the league title in 2020, Klopp insisted: "They can sing whatever they want, apart from my name, before the game is finished. I’m not here to dictate what they have to sing.

"If our fans would not be in a good mood now, that would be really strange. The only thing I can tell you is that we are here to work, it’s as easy as that. It’s a very positive atmosphere even in interviews after the game, but I have to keep myself really concentrated, because I know already that on Thursday we play against Wolves."

He added: "That’s the truth. To be honest, I’m only interested in that game and nothing else. But, again, of course they are allowed: to dream, to sing, whatever they want. As long as they do their job as well in the moment where we play, all fine. We will not be part of that party yet but it’s no problem. We know our job."
