Arsenal were left down to ten men during Arsenal's match at Wolves when Myles Lewis-Skelly was sent off on the brink of half-time.

The youngster made contact with Matt Doherty's foot and ankle and referee Michael Oliver deemed the challenge worthy of a straight red card. Lewis-Skelly's studs were judged to have been up and in a dangerous position.

The decision was reviewed by VAR officials Darren England and Adrian Holmes who were in charge at Stockley Park. After looking over the incident, they did not see it as qualifying for Oliver to check again on the pitch-side monitor and Lewis-Skelly walked off the pitch.

Taking to X, the Premier League Match Centre wrote: "The referee’s call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play."

While Premier League clubs can appeal red cards, they are often unsuccessful. The Gunners may well believe that this is an injustice and the only way in which sending-offs issued by two yellow cards can be reversed is if it was a case of mistaken identity.

With the help of VAR there has not been any of this in the top flight for a while, especially since the Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain-Kieran Gibbs incident between Arsenal and Chelsea. Although Arsenal will be feeling aggrieved by the decision, it might prove difficult for Lewis-Skelly to get out of this three-match suspension.

If Arsenal are unsuccessful in their appeal, the 18-year-old will miss the matches against Manchester City, Newcastle United in the League Cup and Leicester City next month. Asked about whether the club will appeal the decision during his post-match press conference, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta replied: "Well hopefully we don't need to."
