Arsenal marked Renee Slegers' permanent appointment as head coach by securing a comprehensive 5-0 win in the Women's Super League against Crystal Palace at home.

Arsenal announced the permanent appointment of the 35-year-old earlier in the week.

She was placed in temporary charge in October, following the resignation of Jonas Eidevall.

The Gunners won 10 and drew one of their 11 games under the interim guidance of Slegers.

That record was enough for her position to be made permanent.

Captain Leah Williamson netted her first Arsenal goal since March 2023 with a sixth-minute opener againts Palace, but it didn't immediately trigger a scoring spree.

That happened after Alessia Russo doubled the hosts’ lead at Meadow Park after 63 minutes, with Beth Mead scoring before Mariona Caldentey netted a late double to ensure a resounding victory.

Elsewhere, Chelsea bounced back with a commanding 5-0 victory over West Ham.

Sonia Bompastor had maintained an impeccable record in the league after nine games until the Blues unexpectedly drew 1-1 at Leicester on December 14.

A winter break put the season on hold, but the visitors netted three times in the first half at Chigwell Construction Stadium in their first league match in over a month, to retain their substantial lead at the top.

Catarina Macario, Erin Cuthbert and Aggie Beever-Jones scored before half-time for Chelsea, while Sandy Baltimore added a fourth after the interval.

The scoring was concluded when Amber Tysiak inadvertently scored an own goal towards the end.

Elsewhere, a fourth-minute own goal by Janina Leitzig gave Tottenham a hard-earned 1-0 win over Leicester, moving them up to sixth in the table.
