Jamie Carragher has explained why he believes Arsenal and Chelsea will both miss out on the Premier League title.

Both the Gunners and the Blues are battling with Liverpool to win the league title this season as the New Year fast approaches. Arsenal are second after their win over Ipswich Town on Friday night and are six points adrift of the leaders.

Chelsea dropped to third after their defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day and are seven points behind Liverpool in the table. There is still more than half of the season left to play for every Premier League club, but that has not stopped Carragher from issuing a verdict on how the title race will finish.

Carragher believes that Liverpool will win the title despite impressive seasons from Chelsea and Arsenal. The former defender has praised the Blues for their improvement under Enzo Maresca, but listed injuries as one of the reasons why the Gunners will miss out in the title race.

"It is between Liverpool and Arsenal. Enzo Maresca has done an excellent job at Chelsea this season," Carragher told The Telegraph.

"I was not sure when the club opted not to keep Mauricio Pochettino last summer, but they appointed a coach with a specific profile and Maresca has brought the squad together. Having said that, I agree with him [Maresca] that Chelsea are not quite ready to become champions. They will need another goalkeeper and centre-half before they can go the distance.

"Arsenal’s biggest problem right now is their injuries. They managed to avoid too much disruption in the last two years but their squad has been stretched this time.

"Mikel Arteta will find the answers to ensure the team improves in the second half of the season, and they have built valuable experience of a run-in. If they can get to March still close, they will believe.

"But I am speaking with my head and heart when saying Liverpool will pip them to first place. Arne Slot’s attacking options are the strongest in the Premier League.

"My only worry for Liverpool is if they pick up injuries to their big players. If they can avoid them, they will be difficult to catch. Chelsea will finish third and despite their issues I see Manchester City finishing in the last Champions League spot."
