Arsenal confirm Tommy Setford arrival from Ajax to continue goalkeeper shake-up

Arsenal have sealed the signing of goalkeeper Tommy Setford from Ajax.

Setford arrives for a fee under £1million and has signed a four-year deal, with the Gunners holding the option of a further 12 months.

The 20-year-old had entered the final year of his contract with Ajax, who opted to sell rather than risk losing him for free at the end of the season.

Setford has been signed for the academy but will regularly train with the first team. He will immediately be exposed to first-team action by flying out with the squad on their tour of the United States.

The youngster, once tipped to become Ajax no1, has joined Arsenal due to the pathway to first-team opportunities.

Setford is the second teenage goalkeeper Arsenal have signed this summer, having already brought in Lucas Nygaard from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland. He will link up with the Gunners’ academy sides.

David Raya, who is currently on holiday after winning Euro 2024 with Spain, officially became an Arsenal player earlier this month, after the club activated a £27m option to make his move from Brentford permanent as expected.

Arsenal have moved to add to their goalkeeper options with uncertainty over Aaron Ramsdale’s future.

The 26-year-old will also not join his team-mates for pre-season until later in the summer, after his involvement at the Euros, but he has been strongly linked with a move away from Arsenal, as he looks for regular first-team football.
