Arsenal has been dealt another major injury blow amid its Premier League title race with Liverpool. Mikel Arteta's side will be without the Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli for more than a month with a hamstring issue.

The 23-year-old has had a scan today after picking up the problem during the Gunners' 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United this week. The results, according to The Athletic, have confirmed he will miss league matches against Leicester City, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest, and potentially Manchester United and Chelsea.

The next round of the Champions League falls within that time period too, though Arsenal does not yet know its next opponent. Having tried and failed to sign another forward in January, with Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins unsuccessfully targeted, Arsenal is already light in that department.

"He (Martinelli) felt something, I think it was his hamstring and he wasn’t comfortable to continue," Arteta said after his side's 2-0 defeat at St. James’ Park, which sealed a 4-0 aggregate exit from the Carabao Cup. "So, we will have to have an MRI scan tomorrow to see the extent of the injury."

Without Martinelli, the burden on Leandro Trossard, Kai Havertz and Ethan Nwaneri to sustain an attacking threat will only increase. Arsenal is currently six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race but it has played a game more. The Reds will draw level on matches played with next week's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Arsenal, having been knocked out of the FA Cup last month by Manchester United, is currently away in Dubai on a mid-season training camp. Injured duo Bukayo Saka and Ben White are with the group. Saka's initial prognosis was a return in March while White could be back before the end of February.
