ARSENAL have appealed against Myles Lewis-Skelly’s controversial red card against Wolves and are awaiting the outcome ahead of next week's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Newcastle United.

Lewis-Skelly, 18, became the third youngest player to be dismissed in Premier League history when he was shown a straight red card by referee Michael Oliver in the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 win for taking down Matt Doherty in his own half.

The red card was met with disbelief by pundits, with Alan Shearer calling it “one of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time”.

If the red card decision is upheld, Lewis-Skelly would miss the Premier League games against Manchester City and Leicester, as well as next Wednesday's cup clash at Newcastle. The Magpies lead 2-0 after their first leg success in London.

The appeal will be heard by a three-person independent panel.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was left furious after the red card call, telling Sky Sports “It is that clear that I leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming, but I leave it with you. Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.

Lewis-Skelly trained with his Arsenal team-mates at the club’s London Colney base on Tuesday prior to their final Champions League group fixture against Girona.

Arsenal are third in the 36-team table and are well placed to progress to the last 16 automatically.
