Arsenal finally get Jhon Duran and Benjamin Sesko transfer green light in huge Mikel Arteta boost
Luckily for Arsenal, unlike Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, there is very little jeopardy entering the final matchday of the extended Champions League group phase. A worst-case scenario and Mikel Arteta is still through to the knockout stages.
The same is not true for Europe's two big-spenders across much of the last 15 years. One of them might actually miss out. Arsenal know that their nightmare isn't failing to progress as part of the top 24 but having two unwanted play-off ties next month instead.
To get to this stage there needs to be both an almighty collapse away to Girona and an extremely unlikely set of other results anyway. It is good news for Arsenal as they just need a quiet mid-week following yet another combustible one at Wolves on Saturday.

Arteta and his side need to be out of the spotlight and out of the news, away from tension. Just for a little bit as they gear up for yet more high-stakes football to come.
It is Manchester City at the weekend and then Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg to follow that. These are the sorts of weeks that a season is defined upon, not in an eighth European group game whereby one side is already out and the other is basically through to the last-16.
So, Arsenal can relax and they can plan. They can play with Myles Lewis-Skelly and grin because they can also play with him in the league against City after his red card was overturned. They can operate without new signings and be totally fine.
City and PSG aren't in the position to do that. Despite spending upwards of £120million to bring in Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov, City can use none of them on Wednesday night.
The quirks of the new Champions League format means that registering new players has to wait until after the group phase is finished. Get into the knockouts and the reward is being able to bolster the squad with new players. For now, PSG will also be without statement signing Khvicha Khvaratskhelia.
These are players who can feasibly turn the tide and make a giant impact in matches that really matter to these teams. Arsenal don't have to worry about it.
Not only have they been on the quiet side in the transfer market anyway, they have no need to rush players in. They won't be frustrated that the rules don't allow them to add riches to their squad.
In fact, it is an exciting boost that should Arteta see reinforcements come through the door before Monday's, February 3 deadline, they can then put them straight onto their UEFA list to be used moving forward. That is good news for a team with the ambitions to add a striker to their ranks.
Should Arsenal go all out to pay for Benjamin Sesko this month, or maybe they really do splash out on Jhon Duran, both would be eligible for the next Champions League game that really matters. As players who already operate at Champions League competing clubs, it would be a giant pick-me-up for Arsenal.
They now know that any business completed will be able to fundamentally impact and improve their squad immediately. Had either player been added last week then there would have been a wait to put them into the Champions League team.
