Arsenal have the chance to seal a marquee signing in the January transfer window, which could save their season. Though Mikel Arteta's side sit second in the Premier League table, Liverpool currently appear to be running away with the title as they are six points clear at the top with a game in hand.

The Gunners have been linked to Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Nico Williams and numerous others this month, but a move materialising for any of those three in the winter window always looked unlikely. Injuries to Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and Bukayo Saka, however, saw an attacking acquisition desperately needed.

Despite that, Arsenal appeared no closer to actively pursuing any of those three names but they do now seem to be very keen on signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Interest from Emirates Stadium in the Portugal international emerged in late 2024, with that increasing significantly in recent days.

After their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira criticised the forward for his body language during the game. Following that, numerous reports began emerging that claimed it was unlikely Cunha would sign a new contract and could in fact leave Molineux in the final week of the January transfer window.

While both Arsenal and Manchester United were monitoring the situation, Premier League high-flyers Nottingham Forest had made him their top transfer target in January. This stance being made clear followed very soon after a £22million bid was launched for Brentford's Yoane Wissa.

Focus from the City Ground is now very clearly on a deal for Cunha, with a club-record bid now being prepared. Elliot Anderson only became their most expensive signing this past summer after joining in a £35million deal from Newcastle United.

Arsenal, meanwhile, according to journalist Ben Jacobs, are in contact with the 25-year-old's representatives, but Wolves are relaxed about the situation and do not plan to sell barring a crazy offer.

And now the value of the fee that Wolves may accept has seemingly been revealed, with Sky Sports claiming a £60million bid could tempt them into selling this month. Given the need for an addition in Arteta's frontline and the quality of player that would be coming, that could actually be seen as quite the bargain.
