Arsenal given Ollie Watkins transfer instruction after clear reaction to opening bid
Arsenal's attempt to poach Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins is looking increasingly unlikely after the Midlands club look set to receive a huge windfall for another player - and Gunners fans in the football.london comments sections says that the approach has frustrated them for more reasons than one.
Arsenal had already made one bid for Watkins, which Aston Villa angrily rejected due to the timing of the bid before a Champions League game. The club are expected to try a second bid, but a sale would leave Villa dangerously short on attackers due to the £64 move agreed with their other striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.
Arsenal are expected to try again to tempt Watkins to London, but Villa are adamant that they cannot sell both of their strikers in one window, with days to go until the 3rd February deadline. Arsenal are in need of another forward target to provide the goals they need to challenge for the title.

Two things have frustrated fans about the club's chase for Watkins - one reason is the player himself. Reader Futballfan says: “Although he's in a terrific form at Aston Villa at the moment, will he be at the same form for Arsenal? In my opinion, to pay £60m for nearly a 30 years old striker is a gamble. Is he the long term solution and is he better than previous striker Aubameyang? In terms of work rate, definitely yes, he's better than Auba, but I'm not so sure about the goal scoring rate.”
The other reason that bid has failed to excite fans is the club's timing. Commenter Admin4321 says: “Arsenal has never been serious with buying players in the winter. This year is no exception. I have closed my mind and heart, and watch them continue with the embarrassment.”
Optimusprimed writes: “Arsenal don't actually want to buy. They know Aston Villa would not agree, when another striker Duran is subject to sale currently.”
On our Facebook page, Xavion Xander says: “Villa want to win the CL, and I truly believe no sale of key players will make that happen! It's crucial to retain their top players to maintain team chemistry and momentum.”
John Allen writes: “Arteta has had plenty of time to sign a striker. It's been glaringly obvious that we've been lacking in that department for several seasons. We could have signed Toney. We could also have signed Watkins last season. So he decides a few days before the end of January, that we need a striker... Is that good management?”
Jahlan Kaya Carlisle Stephens says: “Arteta if you pay money for this player, you’re gonna be sacked at end of season. This guy is cup tied in the Champions League. Arsenal need a younger, more powerful, hungry striker, end of.”
Dids Sexton writes: “The 'we tried really hard to sign a striker' statement is coming soon. You have a month to do something but somehow it’s left till the last 3 days and no one is going to let a top striker leave without getting a replacement. City have signed three players and are expecting at least one more. We have the smallest squad of the top four. Gooners, get prepared to be disappointed.”
Muluneh Animut says: “Arsenal's offer for Ollie Watkins is not serious. They waited until Villa sold Duran and sent their offer to them. They know Villa can't sell both strikers, and they sent their formal offer for the sake of public relations.”
