Arsenal's January took another turn this weekend as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by rivals Manchester United via a penalty shoot-out.

Mikel Arteta's side took on Ruben Amorim's in the big all-Premier League meeting of the third round at the Emirates Stadium. They battled throughout as Arsenal came from behind to draw level with their 10-man opposition.

But in the end it was a missed penalty from Martin Odegaard in regulation time, plus another by Kai Havertz after the 120 minutes had been played, that settled the tie. It follows a 2-0 home defeat in the home match of a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final vs Newcastle United last weekend, and failure to catch up to league leaders Liverpool when the opportunities have presented themselves.

The Gunners' season hangs on a knife edge, all whilst the transfer fuss kicks up again amid the January window. So far the club are yet to make any definitive moves despite the opportunity.

And so, football.london has rounded up the latest Arsenal news and transfer rumours heading into a new week of action both on and off the field of play.

Punishment warning

After Kai Havertz won a second-half penalty against Harry Maguire, Arsenal vs United descended into chaos. Almost all of the players on-field rushed into a fracas that saw the penalty-winner end up in a heap on the floor.

With no VAR in use for the third round tie, only Maguire and Gabriel Magalhaes were shown yellow cards.

However, ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett has told Football Insider he expects retrospective punishment from the FA to be dealt. He even used an example from his time of points deductions as a strong warning.

"The mass confrontation which may have also seen a player headbutting an opponent will be the subject of an investigation by the Football Association.

"Years ago, I was in the middle of a mass confrontation involving what was a 21-man brawl. I decided not to red card anyone on the basis I might have had more than a handful walking in the direction of the tunnel.

"So I submitted a detailed report to the Football Association, who investigated and both teams were deducted points. I have no doubt that both teams will be charged for failing to control their players.

"The question that we can ask – if VAR was in operation, that would have been reviewed and the result may well have secured a different outcome."

football.london says: The idea of a Premier League points deduction being handed out to either team - let alone Arsenal - for what happened in this flashpoint seems over the top.

As Hackett says, it would be expected that both teams end up punished after the fact, as the FA and English football authorities seem to be stamping down hard on these sorts of incidents. But a points deduction? You're having a laugh.

Olmo's actions

On Sunday night in Saudi Arabia, Barcelona made an embarrassment of big rivals Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.

Hansi Flick's side lifted the trophy after winning 5-2 in a match that also saw former Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny sent off for the winners. But perhaps the most telling moment of the night involved Dani Olmo.

Barca had failed to register the summer signing for the second half of the campaign, allowing him to become a free agent, however through a court appeal they got him registered for this week's Super Cup finals. And after the win, Marca say his teammates pushed him towards the club's supporters and images show him kissing the club's badge on his shirt.

football.london says: The free signing of Euro 2024 winner Olmo would have been a good one for any club, including Arsenal to capitalise on.

That is why it is a shame he was always committed to Barca and was seemingly never going to leave without a fight. That fight has happened and he is content in his current surroundings. At least for now, Olmo will not be coming to the Emirates Stadium.
