Arsenal injury concerns grow as Bukayo Saka leaves England camp
Arsenal are sweating on Bukayo Saka’s fitness after he left the England camp following injury during the defeat by Greece in midweek.
Saka was substituted in the second half at Wembley with Lee Carsley saying his forward “felt something in his leg” in the build-up to conceding the opener.
Having lost Martin Odegaard to an ankle injury during the last international break, Mikel Arteta could now be without the Premier League’s leading assist-provider this season, with Arsenal medics due to assess whether Saka will be sidelined.
Arsenal face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday during an important part of the season when they look to stay within a point of leaders Liverpool, whom they face on Oct 27.
Arteta’s team also have Champions League matches against Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan in the next month.
England interim manager Carsley will also be without Curtis Jones for the Uefa Nations League fixture against Finland in Helsinki on Sunday, it has been confirmed.
The Liverpool midfielder has stayed in England owing to a personal commitment, with Carsley taking a squad of 22 to Helsinki.
Carsley fielded five attacking players in the defeat by Greece and is likely to change his formation for the clash at Helsinki Olympic Stadium. He has been assessing whether Harry Kane can return from injury after missing Wednesday’s loss.
Phil Foden struggled to make an impact against Greece but Carsley says there must be patience with the Manchester City forward.
“We have to just have to keep persevering with Phil,” he said. “He’s an outstanding talent, he’s definitely a player that is going to have a massive future with England. I think the less pressure we can put on him the better. He needs to be able to keep playing in his own time.”
