Arsenal January emergency transfer on the cards as national media deliver brutal truth
Arsenal are out of the FA Cup at the third round stage for the second straight season after being beaten on penalties by Manchester United.
A year after losing 2-0 to Liverpool in north London, the Gunners are again out of the competition at the earliest possible opportunity. Since winning the 2020 final against Chelsea, Mikel Arteta 's side have won just two ties in the tournament, with one of those victories, over Newcastle United, requiring extra time.
The only team they have beaten in 90 minutes over their last five FA Cup campaigns is Oxford United, who barely avoided relegation to League Two later that season. football.london have rounded up the national media reaction to Arsenal 's latest disappointingly early exit.

Alyson Rudd of the Times wrote: "Incredible how you don't win that game," Mikel Arteta said, as if genuinely stunned by the outcome. It is becoming ever clearer that he needs to sign a reliable striker.
Rudd continued: "Towards the end of the first half Gabriel Jesus was carried off on a stretcher, his hand covering his face, having been hurt trying to dispossess Bruno Fernandes on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area. The United captain felt he should have been awarded a free kick, threw his boot down in dismay and was cautioned. Arteta might well have felt like taking off his own shoes and slamming them into the ground. His side feels jinxed right now with Bukayo Saka out of action after hamstring surgery and Ethan Nwaneri also unavailable in the shorter term.
Jason Burt of the Telegraph wrote: "The truth is Arsenal's set-piece dependency, so heralded that there is even a mural for specialist coach Nicolas Jover outside the Emirates, is becoming a real hindrance to them." Burt added: "They will face Tottenham without Gabriel Jesus, who was taken off on a stretcher after hurting his knee as he challenged Fernandes. It infuriated the United captain, who demanded a foul and was booked for throwing his boot to the turf after it had been dislodged by Jesus.
"With Bukayo Saka already out, it sharpens the focus even more on Arsenal's weak attack, especially as Raheem Sterling came on and was ineffective. Whatever their arguments otherwise, it is indisputable they need a No 9."
David Hytner of the Guardian wrote: "Mikel Arteta and his players departed with regrets as they had the chances to have punished United's 10 men. Profligacy was their enemy, Kai Havertz a major culprit, the substitute Declan Rice another.
"To compound their frustration, Gabriel Jesus was taken away on a stretcher in the first half. Arsenal's attacking options were already reduced, Bukayo Saka the headline casualty. Can the club afford not to make a January signing for the front line?"
