Arsenal legend Martin Keown has taken fans by surprise after he confirmed that everyone has been pronouncing his name wrong all these years.

After coming through the ranks at Highbury, Keown was forced to find his own path away from the club when he was sold to Aston Villa in 1986. However, after making a name for himself at Everton, following a three-year stint in the West Midlands, the centre-back made a triumphant return to the Gunners.

He would be integral to Arsenal upon his return to the club winning three Premier Leagues, four FA Cups and three Community Shields. These accomplishments included going invincible with the club.

Following such an illustrious career at Arsenal, many supporters would have felt like they knew everything there is to know about Keown, including how to pronounce his name. For years, everyone has been pronouncing his surname 'Kee-own'.

However, appearing on the BBC's Football Focus on Saturday afternoon, the former centre-back announced that his surname was actually pronounced 'Kee-owen'. When the presenter Kelly Somers asked if it was alright to stick with 'Kee-own', the 58-year-old smiled and replied: "For now."

Keown is likely to have been left even more disappointed on Saturday evening after watching the Gunners lose more ground in the title race. That is after Arsenal drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion on the south coast.

Ethan Nwaneri gave the Gunners an early lead but a controversial penalty on the hour mark allowed Joao Pedro to equalise. Arsenal are now five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool having played two matches more.
