Arsenal legend Thierry Henry 'agrees' to become Aston Villa boss

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has reportedly agreed to become Aston Villa’s new manager.

Steve Bruce is still in charge at Villa Park, but the Championship side’s new owners do not believe he is the man to take them forward.

Henry has spent the past two years as Roberto Martinez’s assistant for Belgium and signalled his intention to become a full-time manager by quitting his role as a pundit at Sky Sports.

Now, according to the Daily Star, he has held discussions with Villa’s new majority shareholders Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens and verbally agreed to take the job on.

Whilst Henry is keen to take the reins at Villa, Bruce’s future needs to be sorted, as do a contract for Henry and discussions about the club’s transfer budget.

Investment from Egyptian Sawiris and American Edens means Villa have plenty of cash to invest in their squad, but they need to operate within the constraints of Financial Fair Play.

After losing the play-off final to Fulham, Villa are set for their third successive season in the second tier of English football, with the new investors and previous majority shareholder Dr Tony Xia desperate to see them back amongst the elite.

It now looks like Henry will be trusted as the man to do that, which is something of a gamble given his lack of experience in the dugout.
