Arsenal and Liverpool will find out who they will face in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 when the draw is carried out on Friday.

Both Premier League sides finished in the top eight of the competition's league phase, which meant they automatically qualified for the last-16 stage. The likes of Manchester City, Juventus and Atalanta were forced to play in the play-off round, though, after finishing ninth to 24th and all three were subsequently knocked out after losing to Real Madrid, PSV and Club Brugge over two legs.

After Tuesday and Wednesday's games, we now know which teams remain in Europe's top club competition. The clubs left in the Champions League are; Arsenal, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Club Brugge, Feyenoord, Inter, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, PSV Eindhoven and Real Madrid.

Teams will find out who they will face in the last-16 when the draw is held on Friday in Nyon, Switzerland. The competition is using a bracket system, just like in major international tournaments, so Arsenal's route to the final and possible opponents will be mapped out after the draw.

The Gunners know that they can face one of PSV or Feyenoord in the round of 16, with Friday's draw determining which team they will face and whether they will be in the silver or blue side of the bracket. Liverpool, meanwhile, can face one of PSG or Benfica, while Aston Villa can face either Club Brugge or Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal did beat PSV 4-0 at Emirates Stadium in last year's group stage while the reverse fixture finished 1-1. The Dutch side knocked Juventus out 4-3 on aggregate in the play-off round so should not be taken lightly. Feyenoord may be the more favourable opponents. They did beat AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate in the play-off round but have already lost to Bayer Leverkusen, RB Salzburg and Lille in the competition. And they could even be managed by former Gunners striker Robin van Persie, who looks set to be announced as their new head-coach.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be hoping they avoid French giants PSG in the round of 16. Luis Enrique's side beat Brest 7-0 on Wednesday evening, meaning it finished 10-0 on aggregate. The Reds will be hoping they are drawn against Benfica, who only just squeezed past Monaco in the play-offs.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are seeded teams, which means they will play their home leg in the round of 16 second leg. The first legs of the round of 16 will be played on March 4 and March 5, and the second legs will be played on March 11 and March 12. Each club plays once on a Tuesday and once on a Wednesday.

In a best case scenario for Arsenal, the Gunners will be drawn on the blue side of the draw. This means that they would face Feyenoord, although possibly meet Bayern Munich in the quarter-final, then one of Barcelona or Liverpool in the semi-final. A worst case scenario would see Mikel Arteta's men drawn on the silver side, which would set up a match against PSV. Real Madrid could be the quarter-final opponents, with then one of PSG, Liverpool or Barcelona in the semi-final.

It's also worth noting the Premier League title race impact the draw may have. Arsenal face Manchester United at Old Trafford the weekend after the round of 16 first leg, while Liverpool welcome Southampton to Merseyside. The Gunners then face Chelsea at Emirates Stadium a few days after the second leg, although Liverpool have their Carabao Cup final against Newcastle the same day.
